Girl Scouts Fight Global Warming! We're so Green!

"Girl Scouts of Northern California single-handedly puts an end to global warming!"

CFL Girl

Okay, maybe not single-handedly. We’ve partnered with The Climate Project, Sierra Club, and PG&E to create the largest compact fluorescent lightbulb (CFL) giveaway in human history. This is a monumental opportunity for Girl Scouts to do what we do best, change the world!

CFLs use less energy and therefore produce less CO2 than regular incandescent bulbs; 80% less CO2 for the same amount of light!

We’ve been given 250,000 CFLs to distribute free of charge; together we can eliminate hundreds of thousands of tons of CO2 a year! We will distribute CFLs free of charge to anyone in the PG & E service area -- friends, neighbors, anyone who wants them.

The Details:

  • CFLs must be distributed to individuals and not businesses or organizations.

  • Each person (including youth) can receive 1 CFL bulb as long as they are present to receive them, and reside in the PG&E service area (excludes Trinity County and Parts of Shasta County).
  • We must also collect each individual’s name, address, and phone number for verification purposes. This information will NOT be used for promotional purposes ever by GSNC or any of the partnering organizations.

  • All troops can participate as long as they distribute the lightbulbs to residents of the PG&E service area (excludes Trinity County and Parts of Shasta County).

  • Each participating troop will receive 500 CFLs for distribution.
CFL Giveaway Materials:
(click the links to download)

Sierra Club Welcome Letter
Troop Agreement Form
Distribution Sign Off Sheet
CFL Giveaway Flyer

Girls participating in the Fall Product Sale are encouraged to give away CFLs to the general public at booth sales or by any means they choose, so long as they record the information outlined above.

If you’re interested in being a part of this historic event, please review the program materials by clicking on the links under "CFL Giveaway Materials" in the green box, and register directly with Sierra Club. The Girl Scouts of Northern California is NOT processing the paperwork or distributing light bulbs ourselves.

Change a light bulb, change the world!

New Girl Scout Leadership Experience

2008 Program Changes

In conjunction with its 95th anniversary in 2007, Girl Scouting has launched a historic transformation and will focus on our core strength of leadership development for girls in the 21st century. Since it’s founding in 1912, Girl Scouting has continuously developed, adapted, and provided programming so girls would have the leadership skills needed to succeed. Girls view leadership in different ways, so a broad range of experiences will be offered to every Girl Scout. In fall 2008, Girl Scouts of the USA will launch the New Girl Scout Leadership Experience designed to provide girls ages 6 to 17 with expanded leadership opportunities.
