A Girl Scout uniform can be as simple
as the Girl Scout Pin! Many times, though, girls want to wear more
than a pin to identify themselves as Girl Scouts and as members
of a group. Their uniform can be mix and match sets based on preference
and budget and/or a T-shirt created by the girls. Girls work with
their troop leader to determine what the uniform for their troop
will look like.
Girl Scouts of Northern California, Santa Clara County Area has a
Girl Scout Store located in the Council Office. We offer a variety
of Uniform pieces as well as other Girl Scout Items.
Girl Scouts may choose to wear uniforms
at meetings or Girl Scout events to:
- make them easily identifiable to each other and to the public
- foster a feeling of unity among members, and
- reinforce the sense of belonging to the Girl Scout Movement.
Uniforms by Age-Level
Each age-level has a different uniform. Uniforms are not required
to become a Girl Scout, but they offer girls a space to proudly
display the awards, badges, and other insignia that they work so
hard to earn.
Daisy Girl Scouts (ages 5-6) can wear a tunic
over their clothes and place their Membership Pin, Learning Petals,
and participation patches on them. They may also wear official T-shirts,
shorts, or leggings.
Brownie Girl Scouts (ages 6-8) can wear a uniform
with either a sash or vest to display their Try-Its and other insignia.
Other options include the new Hooded Sweatshirt and Pull-on Pants,
introduced in 2004, or various shorts, leggings, skorts, pullover
jumpers, turtlenecks, and T-shirts.
Junior Girl Scouts (ages 8-11) can wear uniforms
with either a sash or vest to display their badges and other insignia.
New styles were introduced in 2001 to include jade green pull-on
style skorts, hooded sweatshirts, white short-sleeve polo shirts,
and khaki cargo pocket pants and shorts.
Cadette/Senior/Studio 2B Girls (ages 11-17) can
wear Studio 2B T-shirts or the new uniform styles
introduced in 2001 featuring a color palette of khaki, navy, and
light blue, and parachute style pants with bungee cords, V-neck
T-shirts, stretch cotton fitted blouses, and hooded sweatshirts.
They may choose to display Interest Project awards and other insignia
on a sash or vest, or wear the Studio 2B charm bracelet.
GS Insignia Placement
Where do you place insignia, and how
do you put them on the Girl Scout Uniform? Two great questions!
Because Girl Scouts organizes pins, patches, badges, and other kinds
of insignia in different categories, it has guidelines for placing
them on a girl's tunic, badge sash, or vest. Click on the appropriate
program level uniform piece in the box in the upper right-hand corner
for Girl Scout Insignia prices, and a diagram of exactly where to
place it.
Here are some basic tips:
- There's a place for everything. You may also refer to insignia
diagrams in age-level handbooks, in local Girl Scout council handouts,
or at GSUSA's web site in in
English or en
Espaņol .
- When in doubt, remember that council participation patches go
on the back of the tunic, sash, or vest. Only earned awards, which
are recognitions earned when participants complete a set of requirements
for a particular activity (Try-It's, Badges, Interest Patches,
etc.) should be worn on the front.
- The Girl Scout Membership Pin is always appropriate for a Girl
Scout event if a member does not have a uniform. Wear it over
the heart.
- Insignia made out of cloth should be sewn on uniforms, not glued
or stapled. Take the time to do it right so these awards or patches
will be there for the next wearing.
- For further details and the exact placement of badges and pins
on the uniform, consult your daughter's handbook, ask your troop
leader, or contact the Council's Program
Assistant by email, or by phone at (408) 287-4170 x240 or
(650) 968-8396 x240.
