Summer Fun Programs

Spa Sugar Pine

Grades 6-9 Sessions 1, 3 Fee $560

Pamper yourself in the pines! Marvel at the breathtaking mountain peaks on your trip over gorgeous Ebbett’s Pass as you head to Grover Hot Springs State Park. Relax in the park’s warm natural spring-fed pool, make your own aromatherapy candles, and spoil yourself with natural facial masks you create. Back at camp, take a leisurely ride through the forest on horseback too. Ah… it’s all about the spa!

Sierra Splashdown

Grades 4-6 Sessions 1, 2, 3 Fee $498

We’re splishin’ and a splashin’—Sugar Pine style! Swim in our sparkling pool everyday, have pool parties, plan a Hawaiian Luau, go creek stomping, and join the polar bear swim club if you choose! Come to our “dive in movie night” and watch a fun show while floating in the pool. Travel to a nearby alpine lake for a day of more swimming fun and have a horse back ride too!

All the fun of Sugar Pine is waiting for you—and you get to DO it twice! Enjoy two trips to the Adventure Tower, two horseback rides, extra time at the archery range, the pool, and the Art Barn. Take a special trip to Mercer Caverns and wander through an amazing cave to see beautiful crystal stalactites too. It’s everything you like to DO and more!

Galloping Gourmet

Grades 4-6 Session 1 Fee $580

From saddles to saucepans, this program has it all! Learn to ride a horse and get creative with outdoor cooking too. At the stables, focus on mounting, dismounting, turning, and controlling your horse at a walk, then hit the trail to practice your skills. After the ride, it’s time for some cookin’ fun! Have a breakfast cookout, get creative with tin can or dutch oven meals, make dinner in a box oven, or whip up chocolate fondue over the campfire. Finish the day with gourmet s’mores! Campers ride three times.

Special Instructions: Level 1: Introduction to Riding Campers do not need any previous experience.

Sugar Pine Shindig!: County Fair

Lake Hoppers

Grades 6-9 Session 3 Fee $595

Water, water everywhere… and it’s all here for you! Visit several amazing Alpine lakes for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and fun in the sun. With lazy days floating and swimming in the pool at camp, pool parties, hanging out with new friends, a horse ride, and more, you’ll bring a splash of fun to your summer!

Home Spun Fun

Grades 4-6 Sessions 2, 3 Fee $498

Ready for some Country Western fun? Make homemade butter, breads, and jams and pack them for a special picnic with your new friends. Create hand dipped candles and learn to dye and spin yarn. Try your hand at quilting, country crafts and games, gold panning, line dancing, and more. Jump in the saddle for a horseback ride and put on a country carnival for the whole camp too.

Fletchers

Grades 5-7 Session 2 Fee $498

Ready your bows, take aim, and shoot some summer fun! Spend extra time at the archery range, make your own targets, and learn about fletching as you prepare for the Great Tri-Archery challenge! In this three-part friendly competition, you’ll shoot at floating targets in the pool, show your archery skills in range challenges, and participate in a special field archery event. With new friends and a horseback ride too, you’re sure to hit a bullseye of fun and adventure.

Starletts

Grades 6-9 Session 5 Fee $605

Be a show stopper and get a taste of the silver screen! Spend a day on the set of an old western movie. Pick your costumes, practice a skit, and create a western movie of your own. Receive a professionally recorded DVD of your movie too. Back at camp, take a horse ride and cook up a chuck wagon style dinner at the stables. You’ll even put on a talent show for the whole camp. Take a bow and hear the applause!

Alpine Adventure

Grades 7-12 Sessions 2, 3 Fee $595

Let the adventure begin! Challenge yourself with extra time on our high ropes Adventure Tower. Experience the fun and challenge of the vertical playpen, the climbing wall, or the horizontal ladder and soar through the air on the zip line. Take your Alpine Adventure to another level by flying across a canyon on a duel 1,500-foot zip line at Moaning Caverns. With your group, choose a day trip such as swimming in an underground cave at Natural Bridges or swimming to the islands at Lake Utica. There’s even a horseback ride waiting for you. Awesome!

Special Instructions: Note: Campers must weigh between 70 and 250 lbs.

Cave Dwellers

Grades 7-12 Session 1 Fee $650

Adventure awaits you underground! Rappel 16 stories down into a cave at Moaning Caverns and crawl through tunnels on a spelunking tour. Journey through a beautiful crystal-filled cave at Mercer Caverns and see amazing stalactites, then take a swim in an underground cave at Natural Bridges. Round out your adventure with a horseback ride too!

Special Instructions: Note: Campers must be at least 12 years old, at least 4 feet tall and weigh a minimum of 100 lbs.

Level 1: Introduction to Riding

Sugar Pine offers quality instruction in the exciting horseback riding sport of Western Equitation. This traditional style of riding, held in a summer camp setting offers girls an awesome adventure! Emphasis in all programs is on skill development and progression in the fundamentals of ground school, horse maintenance, and trail etiquette. Each camper is assigned a horse to care for during their session. From feeding and mucking to helping groom, campers learn the responsibilities that go with owning a horse. Campers receive a riding assessment on the first day of camp and are placed in riding classes based on their skill level. Classes are kept small with a ration of at least 1 instructor to 6 campers. Each camper receives a written evaluation of their skills throughout the session. Campers in the Sugar Pine horse programs also become honorary members of the "Cowgirl Club" and earn a special award at the end of their session.

Galloping Gourmet

Get ready for some horseback riding fun! Have three riding lessons and spend extra time at the stables learning how to take care of your horse. It’s a great way for you and your new camp friends to try a little taste of Western Riding. Enjoy all the other fun things Sugar Pine has to offer too.

Level 2: Beginning Riding Programs

Cowgirl Up!

Grades 4-6 Sessions 1, 3 Fee $655
Grades 6-9 Session 5 Fee $635

Grab the reins and hop in the saddle for a Western riding bonanza! During extended daily riding lessons, learn the fundamentals of this riding style including the correct sitting position at the halt and walk and how to ride in an arena without a lead line. Then progress to controlling your horse at the walk and the jog. Participate in theory lessons, learn to groom and saddle, and take a trail ride too.

Special Instructions: Level 2: Beginning Riding Campers do not need any previous experience.

Hoof Prints

Grades 4-6 Session 2 Fee $595

For the creative Cow Girl! Take your love of art and bring it to the stables. Learn basic riding or improve your skills and show your creative side too. Discover the fun of competition grooming and create a signature look for your horse with braids, bows, and beads. Work with your group to create a giant mural at the stables, have a cookout, and serenade the horses too. Then create a story line, hop in the saddle, and put on a Wild West show for the whole camp! Campers ride four times.

Climb and Ride

Grades 5-8 Session 1 Fee $580

Yee Haw and On Belay? That’s right! Enjoy two of your favorite Sugar Pine activities when you spend extra time in horseback riding lessons and on the Adventure Tower. Have four riding lessons including a trail ride. Learn to ride in the arena without a lead line, demonstrate the basic balanced position at the halt and walk and learn to control your horse at the walk and jog. Theory lessons and grooming and saddling are part of the fun. Then trade your saddle for a helmet and hit the ropes when you climb the vertical playpen or wall and soar through the trees on the zip line.

Special Instructions: Level 2: Beginning Riding Campers do not need any previous experience.

Level 3: Advanced Beginning Riding Programs

Trail Blazers

Grades 6-9 Session 5 Fee $675

Take your horse adventure to the next level! In daily reining classes, improve your position and riding skills at the walk and jog, and then move to trail classes to learn how to maneuver a horse through obstacles. Team up for a unique trail experience and participate in a cross-camp mystery ride. With your group, use orienteering, solve clues, and navigate through trail challenges to reach your goal. Take a sunrise trail ride or pack your food for a midday lunch ride too.

Special Instructions: Level 3: Advanced Beginning Campers must be able to: • ride in an arena without a lead line • lead a horse comfortably • mount and dismount with assistance • begin demonstrating control while maintaining a safe basic balanced position at the walk and jog • demonstrate correct reining position • halt a horse • know the correct application of turning/riding aids • a minimum of 5 previous lessons are required for this program

Saddle and Paddle

Grades 6-9 Session 2 Fee $695

The best of both worlds! Participate in several reining classes to gain skills for controlling and steering at the walk and jog. Learn trail etiquette then head out on extended rides through the Sugar Pine forest. Add a splash of fun at nearby alpine lakes for a chance to kayak and swim in the sparkling waters!

Special Instructions: Level 3: Advanced Beginning Campers must be able to: • ride in an arena without a lead line • lead a horse comfortably • mount and dismount with assistance • begin demonstrating control while maintaining a safe basic balanced position at the walk and jog • demonstrate correct reining position • halt a horse • know the correct application of turning/riding aids • a minimum of 5 previous lessons are required for this program

Mustangs

Grades 4-6 Sessions 2, 3 Fee $675

Improve your riding skills in daily Western Pleasure, reining, and trail classes. Learn to walk your horse over ground poles and practice steering while jogging figure eights and serpentines. Try your hand at gymkhana, and learn patterns used in barrel racing competitions. Display your skills in a horse show for the whole camp complete with the Grand Parade of horses.

Special Instructions: Level 3: Advanced Beginning Campers must be able to: • ride in an arena without a lead line • lead a horse comfortably • mount and dismount with assistance • begin demonstrating control while maintaining a safe basic balanced position at the walk and jog • demonstrate correct reining position • halt a horse • know the correct application of turning/riding aids • a minimum of 5 previous lessons are required for this program

Sugar Pine Leadership Programs

Leadership programs are by application only. To apply, submit your camp registration form and additional leadership application form and reference form, either on-line or by mail or FAX. The application form can be found on the registration page, you candownload it or contact the Girl Scout office at happycamper@girlscoutsnorcal.org. An interview may be required for all programs except Lead On! Only one of the C.I.T. or W.I.T. programs may be taken per summer. The Lead On! Program and any level of the C.I.T. program can be taken in the same summer.

Counselor-In-Training (C.I.T.)

Be at least 15 years old OR entering the 10th Grade C.I.T./W.I.T Fee $665

Improve your leadership skills and learn about the needs of children in the camp setting. Explore the basics of developing and delivering camp program and camp operations. Spend some time working with younger children.

Focus on camp management and gain practical experience in various areas of the camp operation. Practice your leadership and program skills while working with younger campers. Must have completed C.I.T. or its equivalent.

Find your place in camp. Use your leadership and program skills as you work under the supervision of camp staff, in units, or at your favorite specialty area. Carry out an individual project and learn more about camp management. Must have completed C.I.T. or its equivalent. The Deer Lake Adventure C.I.T is specifically focused on adventure programming (waterfront, ropes, etc.) at the Apprentice C.I.T. level.

Advanced Wrangler-In-Training (W.I.T)

Be at least 16 years old OR entering the 11th Grade Advanced C.I.T/W.I.T Fee $695

Improve your leadership skills and learn the basics of horse care and teaching ground lessons. Explore the essentials of delivering a riding program, assist with lessons, theory, and program operations.

Howdy Partners! Time to saddle up and hit the old west for an amazing westernstyle family adventure in the Sierra Foothills. Join the fun when Sugar Pine becomes our very own family dude ranch! Come for a few days or spend the whole week. Enjoy a variety of camp activities such as horseback riding, the Adventure Tower, swimming, archery, arts and crafts, horseshoes, gold panning, day hikes, games in the Great Hall or just relax at pool side. Each day holds a special event for families, from our barn-raising hoedown to a camp-wide talent night. And this year we are celebrating the Fourth of July with our special Americana County Fair Extravaganza! Use Sugar Pine as a base camp for your own family day excursions around Calaveras County or enjoy special excursions led by camp staff, such as a trip to Moaning Caverns to experience a 1,500’ dual zip line, an afternoon of kayaking at beautiful Lake Alpine, or a visit to a nearby Old Western Mining town. (Additional fees may apply.) And of course, end the day with songs around the campfire, s’mores, and good times with friends and loved ones. It’s fun for the whole family. Yee Haw!
